An essential element of the hot stamping process, foil is a thin film coated with the layer of color that will be transferred via hot stamping.  The film is composed of 3 functional layers:

  • A clear film forms the carrier upon which the pigment is laid.  This film is not transferred to the product.
  • A main layer of pigmented sediments that formt he actual colour that will be seen.  Metallic foils employ a 'vaccum metallizing' process that deposits a micons-thin layer of pigmnted alumium ontot he carrier noted above
  • The 'release' coating, a heat activated glue that bonds the pigmented sediments onto the product being hot stamped.

In a rudimentary example above, the foil is placed in between the product to be stamped and the heated die.  When the die is stamped against the foil and product, the foil transfers wherever the raised surface of the die presses against the product (shown on a Model 86 Manual Hot Stamping Press).

Ensuring that your foil and substrate are compatible is one of the most important considerations in successful hot stamping.  Which foil you choose depends on ensuring the release is well-matched to the application and substrate.  Be careful to consult with your foil supplier to ensure that your foil and substrate are compatible.  Not all colors are available for all substrates.

Quick Facts & Terms :

Metallized Foil : The best known hot stamping application, metallic foils provide a bright shiny metallic look to the finished print.  Although gold and silver are most popular, metallic foils are available in a rainbow of colours.

Scratch-Off : Conceal PIN #'s, prizes, or answers with scratch-off foil.  Scratch-off foil hot stamps just like regular foil, but it does not adhere permanently.  When your client later scratches the foil, the scratch-off patch strips away to reveal the information hidden beneath.  Popular for phone cards.
Signature Panel : Ever wonder how they put the signature panel on the back of your VISA card?  Chances are, it's hot stamped.
